The Social and Psychological Benefits of Ice Cream for Seniors

The Social and Psychological Benefits of Ice Cream for Seniors

Who doesn’t love ice cream?! Take a stroll through our photo gallery, and you’ll see many examples of residents enjoying n ice cream at special events and just for fun, year-round.

You might say ice cream is in every person’s cultural DNA because, believe it or not, this popular treat has been around for literally thousands of years. The Museum of Ice Cream tells us that “ice cream was invented over and over again, independently, across different parts of the world, by cultures that had never met and never shared recipes. China, Persia, India, the Middle East. Each one arrived at some version of a frozen, sweet, shareable treat entirely on their own.”

These days, Americans celebrate National Ice Cream Month in July. But why stop there? All year long, every third Sunday is officially designated National Ice Cream Day. Of course, we don’t need an official day to indulge ourselves.

Soooo Good, and Good for You, Too

The Social and Psychological Benefits of Ice Cream for SeniorsIce cream comes in virtually unlimited flavors, and there are low-fat and sugar-free versions for the most health-conscious among us. We eat it because it just tastes so good, and because we love the creamy texture and frosty temperature. But ice cream does so much more for us, psychologically and even nutritionally.

  • It helps cool us on a hot day.
  • It contains essential nutrients such as calcium and vitamins A, D, and B12. In fact, ice cream can serve as a valuable nutritional supplement for seniors who are reluctant to eat other foods or who have trouble chewing and swallowing heavier foods.
  • The sugar in ice cream boosts our energy.
  • It lifts our spirits because eating ice cream releases dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins – the hormones that make us feel good. Researchers in Belgium also discovered that the fat in ice cream works as an additional mood-enhancer.
  • The Social and Psychological Benefits of Ice Cream for SeniorsIce cream brings us together to share something we all enjoy, whether it’s around the table after a family dinner, going out for a cone on a warm evening, relishing vacation time, or part of a community event. This kind of social interaction is especially important for seniors who are prone to feelings of isolation and loneliness.
  • It brings back memories of everyday life when we were kids and special moments throughout our lives. These positive memories can further trigger mood-boosting hormones in any of us. However, for seniors with memory loss, eating ice cream can help resurface and reinforce memories and feelings of well-being. In addition, the dopamine released when eating ice cream can help calm and comfort those with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
  • The Social and Psychological Benefits of Ice Cream for SeniorsIce cream celebrates freedom of choice. We can argue endlessly about which flavor is best, but in the end, we all get to pick our own favorites. This may seem like a small thing, but it can be an extra emotional boost for seniors who find their options more limited as they age.

So, What’s Your Favorite Flavor?

Scoop it atop a cone, dish it up, or build it into a cake. Ice cream brings us together to share our love of this age-old treat. It makes us relaxed and happy, and there’s a lot to be said for that.
