Senior Living Explained
Learn what different types of senior living care are available and which one best fits your needs now and in the future.

September 8th may officially be designated as Grandparents’ Day, but here at Magnolia Manor, we celebrate grandparents every day! One of the ways we do that is by encouraging residents to stay as healthy and active as possible. After all, the longer you live, the more time and energy you’ll have to spend with your grandkids.
Move It or Lose It
The National Institute of Health (NIH) reminds us that, “Whether you love it or hate it, physical activity is a cornerstone of healthy aging … people who exercise regularly not only live longer, but also may live better – meaning they enjoy more years of life without pain or disability.”
Strong muscles and bones and healthy weight work together to improve metabolism, promote heart health, reduce risks of diabetes and Alzheimer’s, and more. Cardio exercise strengthens your heart muscle and your circulation, which benefits every organ in your body including your brain. Maintaining flexibility improves balance to reduce the risk of falls.
You don’t need to be an Olympic athlete, just do your best based on your body’s ability and health status. Every little bit helps. And if you need motivation, just think about all the things you still want to do with your grandkids.
There’s More to Good Health than Staying Busy
Eat smart. If you want to stay healthier and live longer, focus on eating foods that are high in protein, vitamins, and minerals but low in fat and sugars. Protein is especially important for seniors to help counteract muscle loss due to aging. Healthy diets for seniors include:
Talk to your doctor or nutritionist to be sure your diet is not only nutritious but appropriate for any health conditions you have.
Kick back. Relaxation helps reduce stress, and that’s good for your physical and mental health. In fact, a good night’s rest is essential to give your body a break. While you’re sleeping, your internal systems are replenishing themselves so you’ll be refreshed and ready to take on the new day tomorrow.
If you sometimes have trouble sleeping:
Socialize. Humans are social beings, yet it’s all too easy for seniors to become isolated or feel lonely if it’s harder to get out and about or if family and long-time friends are no longer nearby. Staying connected not only boosts mood and quality of life it helps seniors live longer by reducing stress and infusing a sense of purpose into each day.
The NIH reports reducing stress and maintaining a positive outlook can help seniors live an average of three years longer. So plan things you can look forward to doing with others, whether it’s a coffee date, a Zoom catch-up, a shared hobby, a stroll by the lake, or volunteering for a local project.
