May Events to Remember

Things may not be back to normal yet – whatever “normal” may turn out to be – but here at Magnolia Manor our staff and residents are so happy to see the return of in-person events. Virtual get-togethers simply do not rise to the occasion like the opportunity to see, hear, and hug one another up close and personally.

So, you can be sure we are doing all we can to reconvene for activities small and large. Many of these activities center around our own campuses and residents, of course. But some also serve to reinforce the close relationships we enjoy with our surrounding communities. Here are two recent examples.

2nd Annual Evening with Magnolia

This year’s event was held at Lee Council House in Americus on May 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. All of the tables were sold out, so there were 150 guests in attendance. The event was a tremendous success, in multiple ways! The Canterbury Kitchen catered a delicious dinner, local favorite Thurston Clary provided the musical entertainment, and what would a joyous fundraiser dinner be without an auction?

Our Evening with Magnolia featured both a silent auction and a live auction. Bidders went home with a number of wonderful winnings including vacation trips and special art pieces. However, perhaps the biggest winners were our Magnolia Manor residents, because auction proceeds benefited our League of the Good Samaritan. This fund helps ensure no resident ever has to leave their home with us because, through no fault of their own, they are no longer able to afford the cost.

Epworth by the Sea Older Adult Retreat

This 3-day event was held May 16-18, hosted by Epworth by the Sea at their picturesque coastal retreat on St. Simons Island. Older adults were invited to attend for fellowship and to learn more about making the most of senior living. Educational sessions covered topics such as financial planning and life planning.

There was also a session on Life at Magnolia Manor – after all, one of our campuses is located right there on St. Simons Island. The session was led by Senior VP for Communications, Ty Kinslow, and Director of Donor Relations, Chealsea Cromer. They explained the levels of care available at each of our nine campuses in south Georgia and how each location is unique, yet part of the same overarching Magnolia Manor family.

Ty and Chealsea also gave participants an ‘Insider’ look at what it’s like to live at Magnolia Manor, with testimonials from current residents.

In addition to the educational opportunities, attendees heard from Missy Buchanan, an inspirational speaker who says a “holy nudge” motivated her to focus on seniors and their need for hope and joy as they face the challenges of aging. Participants were also regaled by Andy Orcutt Irwin, an entertaining performer who delivers a unique blend of story-telling, humor and musical ballads.

Fellowship wove throughout the event, with chances to chat during meals and free time as well as a variety of side-trips. Participants got to choose options including a dolphin tour, a shrimp boat excursion, a trolley tour, and exercise classes. It all makes you wish you’d been there, doesn’t it?
