It’s easy to understand why young adults purchase life insurance. It provides financial support for families if a wage-earner dies young from disease or an accident. Many types of life insurance also serve as broader financial management tools. And life insurance is inexpensive when you’re young. But what if the years have sped by and you still don’t have life insurance, or you think you might need more – is it too late?

I’m sorry, what did you say?
If you find yourself frequently having to ask this question during conversations, in person or on the phone, it might be because you need a hearing aid. October is National Protect Your Hearing Month according to the National Institutes of Health, or National Audiology Awareness Month, if you listen to the American Academy of Audiology. Whatever you call it, the message is the same.

Medicare and Medicaid are both government programs that provide certain types of health care coverage for seniors. Although the programs are very different, they are often confused. Just as the name implies, art therapy combines the creative process with psychotherapy, to help individuals improve their mental health and overall well-being. Art therapy addresses the mind, body, and spirit – a holistic approach to quality of life that we heartily endorse here at Magnolia Manor. But we appreciate art therapy for another reason, too.

We are proud of the outstanding care we give each of our residents here at Magnolia Manor. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do even better. We treat residents like family, and who doesn’t want the very best for their aging Mom or Dad?
So we created the Magnolia Manor Career Ladder Program. Employee satisfaction surveys revealed that our CNAs were very interested in finding ways to advance their career. After some research, we developed this 3-part progressive training program. We launched the program in 2018 at our Marion County (Buena Vista) campus, and now offer it at our Columbus campus as well.

COVID Won't Keep Us From Meeting the Spiritual Needs of our Residents
Here at Magnolia Manor we’re working hard to keep our residents’ spirits up during these trying COVID-19 times. Naturally that includes spiritual care as well as keeping minds and bodies engaged. After all, we are a faith-based community. Leading the way in this effort is John Walker, Senior Chaplain at our Americus campus and Vice President of Spiritual Care for all nine of our Magnolia Manor campuses.
“It’s totally changed the structure of worship,” he says.

Most adults start to notice a need for glasses as they reach middle age – at least for reading. But aging can affect our eyes in other ways as well. And some of those changes pose more serious problems than the need for a stronger eyeglasses prescription. That’s why regular eye exams are essential for seniors. But how often should you (or your older parent) get your eyes checked?

These days we are so enthralled with all the ways we can connect with loved ones electronically, we almost forget about good, old-fashioned postcards and letters. You know – the ones that come in the mail. We rudely refer to it as “snail” mail because it takes a few days (so long!) to arrive. Hardly the split-second communication we’ve become accustomed to in our impatient world.

Here at Magnolia Manor, we consider every resident to be a member of our family as well as yours. Since the coronavirus first became known, we have taken maximum precautions that go beyond CDC and State of Georgia guidelines to protect our residents and staff from this very serious health concern. It hasn’t been fun, but it is important! And our diligent efforts are paying off.
